Stacy Ericson
Stacy Ericson’s work has always moved in the direction of coaxing the still stones to speak up. Her educational background includes the study of theatre, ancient languages, Etruscan culture, and World Religion. During an intense period of focus on Modernist verse forms and child-raising, she waited none too patiently for seismic inspiration. The onset of a genetic disease began the quake and lightning struck at last in a cold New Mexican field while experimenting with the photography technique of intentional blur, captured through camera movement.

The dead and the discarded, dry wisps, and fallow fields, industrial textures, and rural detritus became an esteemed palette. “Even photographs that seem to be in focus capture light differently when the camera itself is in movement,” she insists. “It is as if the static object has been holding its life-force within, only to be revealed with the introduction of a random element of moving time. Ericson prefers a slight point of focus to a completely abstract blend of colors. Her images play with ideas about time, animation, stillness vs. movement, and the nature of perceived reality and value.
